Ebook About
A high school dropout at 15, and deported from Canada at 17, John Barbour is recognized as "the godfather of reality TV" for his role as the creator, producer, co-host, and writer of the trendsetting hit Real People. He won the first of his five Emmys as the original host of AM LA in 1970, where he interviewed controversial anti-war guests like Mohammed Ali, Cesar Chavez, and Jane Fonda. He was the first in America to do film reviews on the news, winning three more consecutive Emmys as KNBC's Critic-At-Large. He spent ten years as Los Angeles Magazine's most widely read and quoted critic and early in his career, he made stand-up comedy appearances on The Dean Martin Show, The Tonight Show, and others. In 1992 he wrote and directed the award-winning The Garrison Tapes, which Director Oliver Stone heralded as "the perfect companion piece to my movie, JFK." In 2017 he wrote and directed part two: The American Media and the Second Assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which was applauded as "the definitive film on JFK and the rise of Fake News." In this highly entertaining, deeply informative autobiography, readers will discover what a multifaceted storyteller Barbour is.

Book Your Mother's Not a Virgin!: The Bumpy Life and Times of the Canadian Dropout who changed the Face of American TV! Review :

I was approached about reading this book for review and I looked into it. As it seemed different from about anything I’ve reviewed, I thought sure. In short order, one of my minions brought me this package in the mail and it was a copy of John Barbour’s book “Your Mother’s Not A Virgin! The Bumpy Life and Times of the Canadian Dropout Who Changed the Face of American TV!”My first impression of it was that it was a big book. At over 700 pages and just shy of the size of a 5.8 x 8.3 planner, it was the size indicative of a really good, epic fantasy book. For some reason, this brought a smile to my face and made me as anxious to read it as when Robert Jordan or Terry Goodkind finally released a book in one of their series’ that I loved so much but took forever to receive the next installment. I read over the back and laughed a little. At the end of the blurb, it states that John is the father of a co-executive producer of Criminal Minds which we had been binge-watching at my house. In fact, there was a paused episode of Criminal Minds on the screen of the TV in front of me. I read the book cover to cover 4 times in a row and am in the middle of my fifth reading. This is unheard of for me as I rarely reread the same book. I have a few that I will pull out every few years, generally to share with someone or I would use in my youth for practice for theater class, auditions, or my forensics (competitive theater) class. Just for the sake of rereading though? That’s never been my thing. At best, I will look back to find specific passages to prove I’m right when discussing the book or to find an exceptional quote. This book is so vast, so entertaining, it’s not like rereading but like revisiting a conversation. Actually, that’s exactly what it is most like because John Barbour’s writing style is conversational. In fact, I found myself grabbing a notebook just so I could reflect over the book as I read it. Sections struck me as though I were reading a letter from a pen-pal and I had to write a response or I was never going to be able to move on. Being a little bit of a history buff and lover of classic movies, I was utterly absorbed in the stories of his first visits to Hollywood and Las Vegas. He brings you stories about people who happen to be stars as opposed to name dropping celebrities for bragging rights. That strikes just the right tone for me. I mean, celebrities are people after all and I find the way he discusses them to be respectful of that. He has very warm humor and isn’t afraid to poke fun at himself but he’s also not afraid to share the more vulnerable side of himself. He recounts tales of a childhood filled with missteps, neglect, abuse, successes, love, and dysfunction. (Though some of the tales put the FUN in that dysfunction.) Be aware that there may be some aspects that should be labeled “trigger warnings” for some but for me personally, they didn’t trigger so much as feel relatable. The Indigo Girls have a song titled “Virginia Woolf” that has a line that says it best. “Someone’ll get a letter to your soul” and that’s what it’s like. He doesn’t have to embellish with words meant to evoke some type of emotional response because of those who can relate simply will. Those who can’t relate will see the superficiality of the situation and will be able to intellectually see it for what it is. That’s why I’m not tagging it with “trigger warning.” It isn’t gratuitously graphic but stark in its depiction. Reading through, I was reminded of the moments of my youth as he discussed things that I remembered watching with my grandparents. I’m a big fan of being able to know both sides of something so getting the behind-the-scenes look at a show I remember watching with my grandparents and aunts was amazing to me. Not only was I learning the behind-the-scenes but I was reminded of moments I wouldn’t have otherwise thought of and hadn’t in years. As we are being taken through the early portion of a long life, sex is something that is touched upon. Although it would be easy to say "sex sells" (especially since so much pertains to the Hollywood and Las Vegas areas), John touches upon them as a gentleman would, with respect for his partners and the reader.  Despite the length of the book, there were very few typos. I’ve read shorter books, from huge publishing houses, by established authors, who have had their books edited professionally and beta read that have had more typos. Those that are there aren’t huge ones that distract from the story at all. I think John could easily continue his entertainment legacy by putting his own productions out on social media. He easily has the personality, wit, and humor. I’m now a huge fan of his and look forward to when the stars align ever so briefly and I can have the uninterrupted time to stalk him via the wonderful internet. I honestly loved this book so much that I bought a copy on Amazon just to ensure two things. I first wanted to ensure that they didn’t take the review down by making it a verified purchase. The second was to make sure I always have a copy of this book. I know myself well, and I know that I’ll be loaning the book out or reading excerpts to friends. I can easily see this joining the marching book band that somehow wanders its way out my door never to be heard from again. This is one I would replace, and quickly. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy autobiographies, film and broadcasting fans, history buffs, or those looking for a good story that is a genuinely emotional experience.
Albert Einstein once said about academic freedom "that I understand the right to search for truth and to publish and teach what one holds to be true. This right also implies a duty: one must not conceal any part of what one has recognized to be true.John Barbour has indeed fulfilled his duty to honesty and truth against all odds and costs. I just finished the book and what better way (on father's day) in regards to the blessing's of his son that I read about, to thank him for this book.
